How To Clear Out Before Moving House
Before moving house, make yourself a check list of what you have to do. Planning things out beforehand will save you a lot of stress down the line.
Decide What Should Stay and What Should Go
Guaranteed you have a lot of stuff you haven’t used in years but have never thrown it out because you might need it some day. Well, guess what, you’re never going to use it! If you haven’t used it now you’re not going to after moving house. Get rid of that old bike you bought in a misguided attempt to get fit ten years ago, and sell it for a few bucks.
Clear Out the Closets
As with all the old rubbish that’s blocking up your garage, there’s also a lot of old clothes and shoes lying in your closet you haven’t worn in years. The main thing to remember when clearing out your closet is to be ruthless. If you haven’t worn something for over a year, get rid of it. Make two piles for your old clothes; one for donations and one to sell. If you find yourself standing with an old shirt or blouse and you’re hesitating, get rid of it.
Sell Your Stuff!
One of the most common conflicting emotions we have when having a clear out is when we find something that doesn’t fit any more, or something that can’t be used for one reason or another, but, and here’s the catch, it was expensive, or it was a gift, and so you don’t want to throw it out. It’s a tough one, but the answer is to sell those things. That way, you get a few bucks back for them, and they find a new home and will actually be used. Trade Me is a great way to get rid of your unwanted things. You could always organise a Garage Sale if you really want to have a clear out.
Donate the rest
Ok, so you may not need it any more, but someone else might. If you have any old clothes, toys or furniture, then please donate them to charities that are asking for them. There are many families out there that could use your help, and moving house is the best way to help them with some items you no longer need.
Recycle
If you don’t want to keep something, you can’t sell it, and you don’t think anyone else could use it, then please recycle it. Recycling centres can be found in your local area, and if you’re moving house, then they should be on your to-do list.
